Testing Milky Soda for a Creative Portfolio Website

I was working on a redesign for a creative portfolio site last week, and I needed a display font that felt fresh but still professional. The client wanted something playful to match their brand’s personality—something that would stand out without feeling too gimmicky. That’s when I came across Milky Soda, a cool, paint brushed display font that immediately caught my eye.

The first thing I noticed about Milky Soda was its texture. It had a subtle brushstroke effect that gave it a handcrafted feel, which made it perfect for a designer who values authenticity in their work. It wasn’t too ornate or complicated, so it didn’t feel overwhelming when placed against a hero section with a bold background image.

I tested it in the main headline of the homepage, using it over a full-screen banner featuring a photo of the client at work. The contrast between the soft edges of the font and the sharp lines of the image created a nice visual balance. I also tried it on a few subheadings below the hero section, and it maintained its readability even when scaled down.

One of the key things I looked at was how Milky Soda performed on mobile devices. I often find that display fonts can become difficult to read on smaller screens, especially if they have too many decorative elements. But this one held up well. The strokes were clean enough to be legible without sacrificing the playful vibe that makes it unique.

For the navigation menu, I paired Milky Soda with a simple sans serif font like Helvetica Neue. This combination worked really well—it gave the site a modern look while keeping the text easy to scan. I used the display font for section headings and call-to-action buttons, and the sans serif for body copy and links. It created a clear visual hierarchy and helped guide users through the content more naturally.

I also experimented with using Milky Soda in different areas of the site. On the projects page, I used it for the title of each case study, placing it over a dark overlay on top of a project image. The font added a touch of whimsy that matched the tone of the client’s work. For the contact section, I used it in the heading but kept the rest of the form fields in a more standard font to maintain usability.

When it comes to readability, I found that Milky Soda works best for short phrases and headlines rather than long blocks of text. Its character shapes are expressive, which is great for grabbing attention, but it doesn’t hold up as well for extended reading. That’s why I reserved it for titles, banners, and promotional graphics rather than body copy.

Another thing I considered was the font’s versatility. Milky Soda has a range of styles and weights, which made it easier to use in different contexts. I used the lighter version for headers and the bolder variant for emphasis. It also had good support for multilingual characters, which was helpful since the client occasionally featured international clients on their site.

I checked the font licensing to make sure it was suitable for commercial use, and I confirmed that it had webfont availability. This made it easy to implement across the site without any compatibility issues. I also made sure to optimize the font files for fast loading, which is crucial for maintaining performance on a portfolio site where speed can impact user engagement.

When designing for online brands, choosing the right font can have a big impact on the overall brand experience. Milky Soda brought a sense of playfulness and creativity to the site without compromising professionalism. It helped reinforce the client’s identity as someone who values originality and authenticity in their design work.

If you're looking for a display font that feels both fun and functional, Milky Soda is definitely worth considering. Whether you're building a personal portfolio, a boutique store, or a course landing page, this font can add a unique visual element that stands out in a crowded digital space.

As I wrapped up the project, I realized that Milky Soda wasn’t just a font—it was a design choice that helped shape the entire brand experience. It reminded me that typography isn’t just about aesthetics; it's about creating a connection with your audience and making your message more memorable.
